Living Kidney Donation - A Living Gift

For years, the most common option for a kidney transplant was to wait for a deceased donor. However, developments in transplantation techniques have made the option of living kidney donation more attractive to waiting patients and their potential donors. Laparoscopic nephrectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, allows for kidney removal from the donor; three small incisions allow the surgeon to use instrumentation which can remove the kidney through an additional 2 ½ inch - 3 inch abdominal incision. It has now become the standard surgical technique for LifeLink's living kidney donors, who experience reduced pain, reduced hospital stays and recovery time, and a quicker return to normal daily activities.
