LifeLink HealthCare Institute Fact Sheet
The Organization
The LifeLink HealthCare Institute is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the provision of medical and surgical care for patients suffering from end-stage organ disease.
Established
July 1994
Background
The Institute's staff is comprised of cardiologists, nephrologists, transplant physicians, surgeons, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, nurses, and support staff.
The Medicare-approved Renal Transplant Program is ranked as one of the most active in the United States based on total volume. Since 1973, more than 3,000 kidney transplants have been performed. Our current one-year patient survival rate is 98.4%, and graft survival rate is 96.1%. National patient and graft survival rates average 95% and 89.3% respectively.
The Liver Disease Treatment and Transplant Program became operational in September of 1996 and was approved by Medicare in August of 1999. Since 1997, more than 490 liver transplants have been performed, resulting in a 87.3 percent one-year patient survival rate, and 80.6% one-year graft survival rate. National patient and graft survivals average 87.3% and 82% respectively.
In February of 2001, LifeLink's transplant team began performing pancreas transplants. Since then, 76 combined kidney/pancreas transplants and 12 pancreas transplants alone have been successfully performed.
Cardiothoracic surgeons were recruited in 2001 to implement a lung transplant program at Tampa General Hospital. The first transplant occurred in June, 2002.
The Institute works with Tampa General Hospital and the University of South Florida College of Medicine in the provision of these services.
