Real Life Stories

Francisco Martín Garrido & his patient

Dr. Panchi shares his heart with his patients.
Francisco Martín Garrido - Dr. Panchi to friends and patients - enjoyed a career as a prestigious pediatrician in Puerto Rico until a heart attack forced him to stop working.

Dedicated to his young patients, he was devastated. Doctors made it clear a heart transplant was necessary not only to get back to work, but to survive.

In 2004 a generous donor family gave him the chance at life he needed.

Just over a year later Dr. Panchi was once again back to his beloved practice, helping heal the children of Puerto Rico.

He is the first heart transplant recipient to participate in a 10 K Marathon and he represented his community at the World Transplant Games in Canada.

Despite all his professional achievements, his most valuable gift is the opportunity to wake every morning and see the smiles from his wonderful wife, daughter and two sons.
